How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?
A realistic week-by-week kitchen remodel timeline from a Seattle-area general contractor — what happens when, what causes delays, and how to live through it.
“How long will we be without a kitchen?” is usually question number two, right after price. Here’s the honest week-by-week shape of a full kitchen remodel — the same schedule logic we use on our own jobs.
Before demo: the invisible weeks
Design decisions, cabinet orders and permits happen before anyone swings a hammer. Semi-custom cabinetry commonly runs several weeks of lead time (custom, longer). The single best schedule protection: order everything — cabinets, appliances, tile, fixtures — before demolition day, so the build never idles waiting on a delivery.
The build, week by week
- Week 1 — Demo & discovery. The old kitchen comes out; whatever the walls were hiding gets found and priced honestly.
- Weeks 2–3 — Rough-in. Plumbing, electrical and any framing changes, then inspections.
- Weeks 3–4 — Closing up. Insulation, drywall, paint-ready surfaces.
- Weeks 4–6 — Cabinets & counters. Cabinet install, then counter templating and fabrication — the famous “quiet week” while stone is cut.
- Weeks 6–8 — Finishes. Backsplash tile, plumbing and lighting trim-out, appliances, hardware, punch list.

- For a full remodel without wall moves, plan on roughly 6–10 weeks of construction once materials are on hand — plus the design, ordering and permit lead time before demo starts. Layout changes and custom cabinetry extend that.

- Cabinet and appliance lead times, surprises inside the walls of older homes, and late design changes. Ordering everything before demo — and holding decisions steady — protects the schedule more than anything else.
- Can I live at home during a kitchen remodel?
- Most of our clients do. A temporary kitchen (fridge, microwave, coffee) in another room, dust containment, and a crew that cleans up daily make it very livable.
