Paintthat holds.
Paint fails from what is underneath it, not from the paint. In a climate this wet, prep is most of the job and almost all of the lifespan.

Why exterior paint fails here
Rarely the product. It is moisture getting behind the film — through unsealed end grain, failed caulk at trim joints, bare wood left too long before priming, or siding that was painted while it still held water from the week before. The paint then peels in sheets rather than chalking gracefully, usually on the south and west elevations first.
So the work that matters happens before anything is sprayed: washing and letting it genuinely dry, scraping and feathering failed areas, treating mildew rather than painting over it, priming every bare spot and every cut end, and caulking the joints that should move and leaving the ones that should drain.

The weather window
Exterior painting in Western Washington has a real season. Most coatings need surface temperatures and drying conditions that this region reliably offers from late spring through September, and a wall that looks dry after an overnight shower often is not.
We schedule exterior work inside that window and check moisture rather than guessing. A repaint rushed into October is the one most likely to be back on the schedule in three years.

Interior, and painting inside a remodel
Interior work is a different discipline: protecting floors and finishes, filling and sanding properly, cutting clean lines against trim, and controlling dust and fumes in a house people are living in.
Most of our painting happens as the last stage of a remodel, which is the point where a good finish either lands or does not. Because the same crew owns the drywall, trim and paint, there is nobody to blame for a wavy wall showing through the sheen — which is usually what that argument is about.

| Tier | Range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Interior, per room | $600–$1,500 | Walls, ceiling and trim with normal prep, filling and two coats. |
| Exterior repaint | $6,000–$18,000 | Wash, scrape, mildew treatment, spot prime, caulk and two coats on a typical house. |
| Repaint with repairs | Quoted per house | Rot and trim replacement found at prep, bare-wood restoration, cedar bleed-through sealing. |
Painting questions
- How much does it cost to paint a house exterior?
- In the Seattle area a full exterior repaint typically runs $6,000–$18,000 depending on size, number of storeys, access, how much prep the existing finish needs and whether trim repair turns up. Bids that differ wildly usually differ on prep, not on paint.
- When is the best time to paint outside in Western Washington?
- Late spring through September. Coatings need the surface dry and the temperature stable enough to cure, and a wall that looks dry after rain frequently is not. We check moisture rather than going by appearance, and we would rather move a job than put paint on a damp wall.
- How long should an exterior paint job last?
- Seven to ten years on properly prepped siding here, and longer on fiber cement with a factory finish. Jobs that fail at three to five years almost always failed at prep — painted over mildew, bare wood left unprimed, or applied in the wrong conditions.
- Do you paint as part of a remodel?
- Usually, yes — it is the last stage of most of our projects. Having the same crew own drywall, trim and paint means one party is accountable for the finished surface rather than three pointing at each other.
