What a White Oak Kitchen Costs: Cabinets, Grain and Finish Choices

What a white oak kitchen costs in 2026: rift vs plain-sawn vs veneer cabinets, finishes that keep oak pale, and what our Bellevue white oak kitchen involved.

White oak kitchen cabinetry in a Bellevue kitchen remodel by ENF General Contractors

White oak is the kitchen material of the decade, and searches for it are climbing again this fall. Our own Bellevue kitchen is custom white oak with a navy island, and it is the project people ask about most. Here is what a white oak kitchen actually costs, and where the money goes.

For an average-sized kitchen in 2026, expect $25,000 to $45,000 for white oak cabinetry in plain-sawn or veneer, $40,000 to $80,000 for rift-sawn or fully custom, and $90,000 to $180,000 for the whole remodel with stone, tile, appliances and installation.

Rift, quarter or plain: the cut decides the price

  • Plain-sawn. The familiar cathedral and flame grain. The least expensive cut, warmer and busier in a large run of doors.
  • Quarter-sawn. Straight grain with the ray fleck that oak is known for in Craftsman furniture. Beautiful, more figured than most modern kitchens want.
  • Rift-sawn. Tight, linear grain with no fleck, the calm look in most white oak kitchen photos. The most expensive and the most stable, typically 30 to 60 percent over plain-sawn.
  • Veneer. Any of the three cuts sliced thin over plywood. Rift veneer on slab doors is how many white oak kitchens get the look at a sensible price, and on large flat panels it is often more stable than solid wood.

Door style moves the number too: flat slab doors in veneer are the most economical, a solid-wood shaker frame with a veneer panel sits in the middle, and grain-matched sequenced veneer across a full wall sits at the top. Our kitchen cabinet cost guide has the general cabinet ranges.

Finish: keeping it white oak

Untreated, white oak darkens and ambers with oil-based finishes and sun. The look most clients want, pale and slightly cool, comes from a water-based catalyzed finish, often with a light white or neutral toner, applied in the shop. It costs little more and is the single detail that decides whether the kitchen looks like the photos in five years. We sample the finish on the actual boards you are buying, because white oak varies from tree to tree.

The rest of the budget

In a white oak kitchen remodel around $120,000, cabinetry is usually 35 to 45 percent. Counters follow: quartz or a honed stone that does not fight the grain, typically $6,000 to $15,000, which our quartz vs granite guide compares. Many white oak kitchens pair the perimeter with a painted or contrasting island; our kitchen island cost guide covers that line. Paneled appliances in matching oak add $3,000 to $8,000 of panels on top of panel-ready appliances.

If the wall to the dining room comes out to make room for it, add the beam; see our load-bearing wall guide. And if the boxes in your existing kitchen are sound, refacing in white oak veneer can give much of the look for well under half the price.

What our Bellevue kitchen involved

The Bellevue project on our site was a full kitchen remodel: custom white oak cabinetry, a navy painted island, quartz counters and a built-in coffee bar. Custom cabinetry put it in the upper tiers of our Bellevue kitchen cost guide, and the navy island is a good example of the contrast that keeps a lot of oak from reading as one tone. The Seattle and Everett versions of the same idea are in our Seattle and Everett kitchen guides.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a white oak kitchen cost?
In 2026, white oak cabinetry for an average kitchen runs roughly $25,000 to $45,000 in plain-sawn or veneer and $40,000 to $80,000 in rift-sawn solid or custom. A full white oak kitchen remodel with stone counters, tile, appliances and installation typically lands between $90,000 and $180,000 around Seattle.
Is rift-sawn white oak worth the extra cost?
If you want the calm, straight-grain look that most white oak kitchen photos show, yes. Rift-sawn boards have tight, linear grain and are more stable, but they cost 30 to 60 percent more than plain-sawn, which shows the cathedral grain pattern. Rift veneer on a plywood box is a good middle ground.
Does white oak turn yellow?
It can, with oil-based finishes and UV. A water-based catalyzed finish, often with a light white or neutral tint, keeps white oak close to its natural pale tone for years. We sample the finish on the actual species before approving the order.
Is white oak good for kitchen cabinets?
It is one of the best. It is hard, closed-grain enough to finish well, resists moisture better than red oak, and ages gracefully. It pairs well with painted islands, stone counters and both warm and cool palettes.
